all about rolling your pant legs up

my stuff

Over the holiday weekend I may or may not have ransacked an estate sale early in the morning. My treasure and a few randoms thrown in for good measure.

the noumenal girl

via vanessa jackman

I think girls underestimate the power of a nice smile. Let’s make a deal-you never forget to smile and we’ll never forget to walk on the street side of the sidewalk, hold the door, and quietly marvel at how you can be simultaneously intimidating and impossibly charming all in one motion.

To all the guys that ever played this girl: eat your motherfuckin hearts out.

It’s moments like these that remind you that she deserves better than good enough.

my stuff

Ever since I posted about my Billykirk card case, people have asked how much stuff it can really hold. I finally got around to taking a few photos that may help show its capacity.

As you can see, I’m not wary of stuffing this thing. The stitching, snaps, and leather are all tough enough to take a little stretching. The case itself has molded around my daily carry and now everything I need slips in and out with ease.

I use the rear pocket for anything I need to take out quickly and whatever cool cards I find along the way.

What’s currently in the rear pocket. I lost my hipster card, but I think these combined help bring my cool points back up. The best thing about market week (coming up July 17 book your NYC plans now before it’s too late) is you get to see everyone’s business cards and go all Patrick Bateman during the obligatory card exchanges.

Doesn’t it look like my cardcase is pregnant? Maybe it’ll give birth to a little coin purse…

Everything I put in the main compartment. I used to keep the hundos in there but now I just use a rubber band.

That’s how it all fits together. What do you keep in your wallet?

Style & The Man

I’m lucky enough to get a few free things in the mail every once in awhile. When Alan Flusser’s seminal tome Style & The Man arrived in my mailbox I was more than thrilled to check it out. While it sounds like a ’70s buddy cop series, in reality it’s a reissue of a great guide to all things style. When the guy who dressed Michael Douglas in Wall Street and Christian Bale in American Psycho decides to let us know what he thinks about men and style, it’s probably best to listen.

The difficult part of so called ‘guides to style’ is that they are often pedantic and have an air of superiority to them. As if the author is letting you into a secret club in which all members are well dressed and know all the cheat codes to Contra. Flusser avoids these pitfalls by simply giving information-how a suit is made, what to look for in a shirt, the differences between English and Italian shoes-without talking down to you. With humor and an enormous wealth of knowledge, Flusser is able to state the rule and also give you its historical provenance. It’s interesting to learn that almost universally accepted rules of style got their start as personal idiosyncrasies.

Amen Mr. Flusser, amen. The lesson? Tell your girl you love her, but you’re gonna pick out your own clothes like a big boy.

I’d love to have a girl that helps me tie my bow ties, but until she walks into my life I’ll use this handy guide.

Want to look like those steezy Italian guys that are certified girlfriend stealers? This book will help, trust. From letting you know what a canvassed suit is, to giving you some simple guidelines for getting it tailored. Everyone is throwing around the term sprezzatura lately. But before you can break the rules, you need to know them.

Get Style & The Man here.

hunting out of season

Taking a cue from Angelo, I decided to check out some sales. Like him, I think summer is really the best time to buy outerwear. C.H.C.M. has a great selection and their sale is pretty boss.

Who doesn’t like a Saint James sweater? Not bad for $125. Get it now and if you start growing your beard out, you’ll be full on sailor by the time the mercury drops.

I’ve seen this Folk jacket in person and it’s great. I love a good nylon jacket and if I had the money this would be my summer purchase.

Folk always includes clever, useful details that generally remain noticed only by the owner. The detachable hood stows inside this inner pocket.

Who care’s if it isn’t rabbit season?

If Ted Williams tells you to shoot a deer, you shoot son.

Last time I was at my favorite place in Detroit I grabbed a few magazines and vintage sales catalogs and brochures. As I was flipping through, I noticed the ads in a hunting magazine from the ’70s. Look familiar?

Vibram soles are the jam. White ones on Yuketen Guide boots please. Think they still go for 5 bucks?

Bean Boots. No words necessary. Girls, you should totally rock these by the way. You’d look all next level at the music festivals compared to the girls in their Hunter boots.

‘Cause, you know you walk at least 20 miles a day in yours, right? Subways are for chumps.

Don’t mess with Ted.

thanks.

I just wanted to take a moment and say thanks. (For those of you who don’t know, this happened on Monday) There are a million people who deserve a thank you, from my parents, to my business partners, to everyone who did a post on us, and everyone who’s ever stopped by this goofy blog. Rather than try and list everyone, I just want you guys to know that all the kind words and support have definitely made all of this worthwhile. You have no idea how much this means to me. High fives for everyone.

my stuff

Since I got my Billykirk cardcase last July, it’s been a faithful companion keeping my meager funds safe and my Hill-Side bandanna company. I’ve taken a few photos of it as I’ve stumbled across this world and thought it’d be a way to show how the leather ages and just how durable this little wallet really is. Plus who doesn’t love the opportunity to take pictures a la Flat Stanley?

This was my card case brand new. Little did it know it would be relegated to my back pocket for the next 365 days. I wish I could say I tested how much cash this case can hold, but unfortunately my rubber band man days are still a few years off.

And once the leather starts breaking in, you get a mini-Rothko to carry around everyday.

Pretty much all I need- a bandanna, money, music, coffee, and a camera. This was in the coffee shop/restaurant that my sister manages. If you’re ever on a mountain outside of Shanghai make sure you swing by. Having a pastry chef for a sister is awesome. Having her live half way around  the world sucks.

I wish I could say I remember what this monument is. All I know is that I saw it about half way into my trip through Asia.

Taking in the beautiful view of Tokyo.

Can’t go to China and not make it to the Great Wall. Although the case did almost jump into that ravine when a strong gust blew through.

This was the biggest mooncake I’ve ever seen.

Riding The Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka.

It’s not all about benjamins and credit cards you know. Get your card case some culture and take it to Beijing style opera.

Honestly, I’ll probably buy Billykirk card cases and wallets for as long as possible. The color has only gotten richer and more complex and the snaps help break in my jeans.

So next time you’re standing around killing time pull out your wallet and have a Flat Stanley moment. That way you can bore people on a Tuesday.

my stuff- Army Surplus

Army Surplus stores, depending on where you live (sorry New Yorkers) can be a great resource for everything from clothing to camping gear. For those interested in well made affordable gear, your local Army Navy is the place to be.

The key in Army Surplus shopping is knowing what you want.

If you want the look and the function of military gear, but perhaps not the vintage (and the requisite wear and tear that comes with decades of use) look for brands like Propper which have government contracts. Propper makes uniforms exclusively for U.S. Marine Corps and their uniforms are Army approved. They offer products made with the same materials at the same factories (here in the U.S.) as the official military gear. Goretex jackets, baselayers, all the technical gear you could possibly want. At really reasonable prices as well. A lot of the better Army Surplus stores have stocked both new civilian issue Propper and used military Propper. If I didn’t have an arc’teryx I’d definitely be buying a gore-tex shell.

If you’re looking for M-65s with that broken in feel of Clarence’s, then vintage is your game. As with anything vintage the dig is half the battle. Generally, like everything else, the older the item the more expensive. World War II gear and now even Korean War and Vietnam era gear are steadily increasing in price. Ebay and the like have made finding authentic pieces a bit harder, although they still can be found.

Here in the states there’s an obvious premium for American uniforms and jackets. There are a ton of European armies represented and generally they are cheaper than their American counterparts.  A lot of non-issued gear. Which is basically deadstock. Brand new. If you’re not picky about the year (lately I’ve been seeing a lot of deadstock mid ’90s) or country, you can get field jackets, trenches, parkas, almost any type of outerwear at a great price.

This is a Belgian field jacket I picked up a few weeks ago. Unlined, it works great as a rain jacket.  Dirt cheap.  Plus it’s the perfect weight and shape to drape over her shoulders on fireworks night.

Adjustable cuffs, metal snaps, the best thing about surplus gear is that it’s made to last down to the smallest details.

Mid-90s German field parka. Lightweight nylon this jacket is the perfect early Spring and Fall outer layer.  Internal drawstrings at the waist and hem help slim up the silhouette.

I still think Army Surplus bags don’t get enough shine. Almost every bag I use for travel is army surplus.

Obviously, pilots’ gear is well-suited for air travel. This Pilot’s bag is the perfect size for a carry-on. Perfect for cramming as much as possible in that overhead compartment.

It’s Italian, it has to be a stylish bag, right?

Feet. All bags should have feet.

Each of these items were priced well under $50-most being under $20.

Always keep an open mind when at the surplus store, you never know what odd item will catch your eye.

Always keep your trigger finger free.
